In 2008, CORAL's board of directors approved a five-year program—Coral Reefs Forever (Abobe PDF)—to add ten new CRSD project sites, which would bring CORAL's total number of sites to seventeen. This ambitious expansion will allow CORAL to engage local community members, marine recreation providers, MPA managers, and other non-governmental organizations in conservation initiatives around the world. CORAL is in the process of applying our rigorous evaluation methods to the following preliminary project sites under consideration.

Asia-Pacific

Samoa
Located halfway between New Zealand and Hawaii in the heart of the Pacific Ocean, the volcanic island of Samoa is covered by verdant rain forests and protected by a fringing coral reef.

Palau or Pohnpei
The Republic of Palau is an island nation consisting of sixteen states located in the Pacific Ocean some 500 miles east of the Philippines.

One of the wettest places on earth, Pohnpei is the largest of the four states in the Federated States of Micronesia about 2,500 miles southwest of Hawaii.

Solomon Islands
Located east of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands consists of nearly 1,000 islands in Melanesia.

Philippines
CORAL is considering two sites in the Philippine Islands, which are located southeast of China in the Philippine Sea.

Andaman Islands
Part of a territory of India, the Andaman Islands are located on the eastern side of the Bay of Bengal.

Indian Ocean

Maldives
Consisting of more than 1,000 coral islands that form an archipelago of 26 major atolls, the Maldives are located southwest of Sri Lanka on the equator.

Sri Lanka
Located off the southeastern shore of India, Sri Lanka is an island surrounded by a wide coral reef from north to south.

Zanzibar
Zanzibar is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the East African republic of Tanzania.

A small island located in the southern Caribbean, Bonaire is known for its pioneering role in the preservation of the marine environment.

Mexico
In addition to CORAL's sites in Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, we are considering a third site in Mexico.

St. Kitts/ St. Lucia
The Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis is a federal two-island nation in the West Indies.

Part of the Lesser Antilles, St. Lucia is an island nation in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean.
