Awareness & Outreach
Despite growing interest in and awareness of global environmental issues, many people don’t realize how urgent it is to protect coral reefs now. Supporting an estimated 25 percent of all marine fish species, coral reefs provide food, protection, and income for more than 100 cultures around the world. Yet, coral reefs in 93 countries have been damaged or killed by human activity, which is why CORAL is dedicated to spreading the word through a variety of outreach initiatives. Our members and partners take an active role in helping us educate local communities, government leaders, and marine recreation providers about the growing threats to coral reefs; together we can build a strong community for real change. Even if you don’t live near a coral reef, there are many things you can do to help protect them for future generations.
Through its Coral Reef Sustainable Destination (CRSD) approach to conservation, CORAL partners with local community members, government leaders, and marine recreation providers to build awareness about the threats facing coral reefs around the world. These are just a few examples of the ways we are working to protect coral reefs for future generations.

International Year of the Reef
As a founding member of the International Coral Reef Action Network, CORAL was a collaborator in the first International Year of the Reef (IYOR) in 1997. For that event, CORAL hosted online support for event organizers, sponsored a traveling coral reef photo exhibit, and established the first Bonaire Dive Festival.
CORAL is proud to be an official Friend of IYOR for 2008. This worldwide campaign seeks to raise awareness about the importance of coral reefs and motivate action to protect them. CORAL will return to Bonaire to rekindle the IYOR spirit and reach out to new audiences with the message that we can save coral reefs. The first IYOR carried a grave message about the future of our reefs, but today we have the tools to take action. Learn more »
